## Biography

Dias Gomes, born Alfredo de Freitas Dias Gomes, was a Brazilian playwright, novelist and author of telenovelas. He was born in Salvador, Bahia, on 19 October 1922 and died in São Paulo on 18 May 1999.

He began writing plays as a teenager and later worked in radio and television. His play *O Pagador de Promessas* (1959), also known as *The Given Word*, was adapted into the 1962 film directed by Anselmo Duarte, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He wrote numerous telenovelas for TV Globo, including *O Bem-Amado* and *Roque Santeiro*, as well as other plays and miniseries. In 1991 he was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

From 1950 until her death in 1983 he was married to the writer Janete Clair, also known for her work in telenovelas.
