Her career began at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. She gained attention on Broadway in Arthur Kopit's *Indians* (1969–70) and later appeared in revivals of *Antigone* (1971) and *Arms and the Man* (1985).

Arliss is known for her role as the contract killer Loretta Salino in *The Sting* (1973). Other film credits include *Xanadu* (1980), *Firefox* (1982) and *Bless the Child* (2000). Television work encompassed *Rich Man, Poor Man*, *Dallas*, *Quincy, M.E.* and voice roles in animated series.
