Divine, born Harris Glenn Milstead, was an American actor, singer and drag performer. He was born on 19 October 1945 in Towson, Maryland, and died on 7 March 1988 in Los Angeles, California. He became closely associated with filmmaker John Waters and starred in several of his films, including the lead role of Babs Johnson in *Pink Flamingos* (1972).

Divine also appeared in Waters's *Multiple Maniacs* (1970), *Female Trouble* (1974), *Polyester* (1981) and *Hairspray* (1988), in which he played Edna Turnblad and Arvin Hodgepile. He performed in theatre productions and had a career as a disco singer in the 1980s.
