## Fi1m on Dominic Brigstocke

> Dominic Brigstocke gives comic performers time to make fools of themselves, and we rate the results. His ensemble work lets ordinary irritation grow ridiculous, though *Green Wing* also shows how easily patience can become overindulgence.

In *Green Wing* (2004), a foolish act is given time to register, along with the performer's attempt to recover some dignity. Dominic Brigstocke shares directing duties with Victoria Pile and Tristram Shapeero, so the achievement belongs to more than one person. What we value in his contribution is the patience: workplace irritation can grow into something ridiculous without losing the annoyance we recognise. We laughed at the physical indignities because the performers are allowed to make recovering from them part of the joke. This is generous comedy direction, and good reason to seek out his television work.

His early work with Alan Partridge put that freedom to practical use. *Knowing Me, Knowing You... with Alan Partridge* (1994), made with Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan, helped establish him as a comedy director. *I'm Alan Partridge* (1997) followed, with Brigstocke directing the first series using a documentary-style approach and improvisation. That rehearsal-based process meant accommodating material that was still being worked out, rather than simply recording a finished script. By the early series of *Smack the Pony* (1999), he was also working in the sketch format that would remain a substantial part of his career.

Robert Harley, Victoria Pile and Gary Howe write *Green Wing* around workplace grievances we can recognise, which gives the physical comedy a useful starting point. That matters when judging Brigstocke: making space for actors works better when they have a clear reason to behave badly. The hour-long episodes sometimes overindulge the silliness, and the directors' patience with a gag is not always an advantage across a whole programme. Some jokes could finish sooner without sacrificing the pleasure of watching the performers embarrass themselves.

On *Horrible Histories* (2009), he worked with producer Caroline Norris and helped create the television format. He directed multiple series before making the feature spin-off, *Rotten Romans* (2019). Our recommendation rests most firmly on *Green Wing*, where there is ample evidence of what giving actors room can achieve. Start there, provided an hour of people abandoning their dignity sounds like a reasonable use of the evening.
