## Biography

Dominic Muldowney is a British composer born on 19 July 1952 in Southampton. He studied at the University of Southampton with Jonathan Harvey, at the University of York with Bernard Rands and David Blake, and privately with Harrison Birtwistle.

In 1976 Birtwistle invited him to become Assistant Music Director at the Royal National Theatre in London; Muldowney succeeded him as Music Director in 1981 and remained until 1997. He has also composed extensively for film and television, including the scores for *Nineteen Eighty-Four* (1984), *Emma* (1996), *Sharpe's Rifles* (1993) and subsequent episodes in the series, and *Bloody Sunday* (2002).

His concert works include several concerti and the ballet *The Brontës* (1994). The radio opera *The Voluptuous Tango* (1996) won the Prix Italia and a Sony Radio Award. He has arranged music for David Bowie and Sting, and taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music until 2006.
