## Fi1m on Dominique Tipper

> Dominique Tipper makes technical competence worth watching, giving Naomi Nagata a directness that helps *The Expanse* through its heavier explanations. We rate her performance more highly than the programme around it.

When *The Expanse* (2015) gets bogged down in explanation, Dominique Tipper gives us someone we can still follow. Her Naomi Nagata is a Belter engineer, and Tipper makes technical competence a substantial part of her appeal. We felt relieved by her directness when the dialogue became work; she made us want to keep listening. The performance helps a programme whose tangled opening does its cast few favours. She is one of our reasons to persevere, though the series itself needs a qualified recommendation.

Her background in commercial dance shows in the physical assurance she brings to zero-gravity and action sequences. Small film parts, including Sarah in *Fast Girls* (2012), preceded the leading role that established her in *The Expanse*. Six seasons gave her room to explore Naomi's flaws as well as her practical abilities. The emotional demands of the fifth season matter here: the role asks considerably more of her than being capable and clear-headed.

Steven Strait, playing Jim Holden, supplies a sober centre, but his seriousness can become wearying when the writing gives him little else. Tipper's directness helps keep us engaged with the dialogue, while Wes Chatham gives Amos Burton an edge that makes him worth watching. These differences between the performances help us get to know people whom the early storytelling makes needlessly difficult to approach. Tipper deserves credit for making Naomi accessible without needing the character to be simple or unfailingly admirable.

The film work offers a smaller basis for judgement: Devani in *The Girl with All the Gifts* (2016) is a supporting role, and her film parts have largely been supporting ones. *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters* (2023), with Tipper as Brenda Holland, continues her work in science-fiction television. Those appearances offer less room for assessment than the sustained work as Naomi, and we would not pretend otherwise. Start with *The Expanse* for her, provided a tangled introduction and lengthy explanations are obstacles worth tolerating.
