## Biography

Donald Esme Clayton Calthrop was an English stage and film actor. Born in London in 1888, he made his first stage appearance at the Comedy Theatre in 1906 and his screen debut in The Gay Lord Quex (1917). He also starred as the title character in the musical The Boy that year.

Calthrop appeared in more than sixty films between 1916 and 1940. He played Tracy in Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail (1929), Ion Stewart in Murder! (1930) and Brant in Number Seventeen (1932). Other notable roles include Bob Cratchit in Scrooge (1935) and Don Escobal in Fire Over England (1937). He was educated at St Paul's School.

Calthrop died of a heart attack in Eton, Berkshire, in 1940 while filming Major Barbara (released 1941).
