He trained at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and was a member of the first graduating class of the National Theatre School of Canada. He made his professional stage debut as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and appeared at the Stratford Festival before moving into film and television. Rhodes appeared as Macon in the 1969 film *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*. He was known in Canada for roles including Sgt. Nick Raitt in *Sidestreet* (1975–1978), Dr. Grant "Doc" Roberts in *Danger Bay* (1984–1990) and Det. Leo Shannon in *Da Vinci's Inquest* (1998–2005). In the United States he played Dutch Leitner in the sitcom *Soap* (1978–1981), Phillip Chancellor II in *The Young and the Restless*, and Dr. Sherman Cottle in *Battlestar Galactica* (2004–2009).
