## Biography

Dore Schary (born Isadore Schary) was an American screenwriter, producer, director and playwright. He began in New York theatre as a stage director, actor and publicist before moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s as a screenwriter for studios including Paramount, Warner Bros. and Columbia.

Schary received an Academy Award for the original story of *Boys Town* (1938), which he also co-wrote. He joined MGM as a writer and later became vice-president in charge of production from 1948 to 1956. Among the films he produced or executive-produced during this period were *The Spiral Staircase* (1946), *Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House* (1948), *They Live by Night* (1949), *The Set-Up* (1949), *Battleground* (1949) and *Westward the Women* (1951). After leaving MGM he founded his own production company and wrote, produced and directed the stage play *Sunrise at Campobello* (1957).
