Doris Day was an American actress and singer. Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, she began her career as a big-band vocalist in the 1940s. Her first hit recording was "Sentimental Journey" in 1945, and she made her film debut in *Romance on the High Seas* (1948).

She appeared in 39 films, including the Hitchcock thriller *The Man Who Knew Too Much* (1956), in which she played Jo McKenna and performed the Oscar-winning song "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)". Other notable roles include *Calamity Jane* (1953), *Pillow Talk* (1959) and *That Touch of Mink* (1962). Day received an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and was the top-ranking female box-office star of her era. She retired from acting in the 1970s and later became known for her animal-rights work.
