## Biography

Doris Hare (1905–2000) was a Welsh actress, comedian, singer and dancer. She was best known for playing Mabel 'Mum' Butler in the ITV sitcom *On the Buses* (1969–1973) and its three spin-off films, taking over the role from Cicely Courtneidge.

Born in Bargoed, she made her stage debut at the age of three in her family's portable theatre and went on to a long career in music hall, variety, pantomime and the West End, with a Broadway appearance in 1936. During the Second World War she compèred the BBC radio series *Shipmates Ashore* for the Merchant Navy and was appointed MBE in 1946. She later worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Her later screen roles included appearances in *The Avengers*, *The Saint* and *The League of Gentlemen*, and she played Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart in the 1990 film *Nuns on the Run*.
