## Fi1m on Doug Hutchison

> Doug Hutchison makes menace convincing without much movement or vocal fuss. We value the restraint of his Tooms and the nastiness of his Percy Wetmore, though those familiar villains offer a narrow view of his abilities.

Doug Hutchison does not need much movement to make a character threatening. As Eugene Victor Tooms in *The X-Files* (1993), he keeps his body and voice under control rather than labouring to persuade us that something is wrong. We found him unnerving because that restraint gave us so little theatrical fuss to laugh off. He makes a strong case for keeping horror performances quiet.

His first film parts were in *Fresh Horses* (1988) and *The Chocolate War* (1988). Tooms was an important television turn, with a return appearance in 1994. Frank Darabont's *The Green Mile* (1999) brought wider notice through Percy Wetmore, a sadistic prison guard. A guard's authority gives the nastiness a different force from Tooms's strangeness. Hutchison makes Percy convincingly objectionable, and Darabont gives that ugliness a useful place in a film so strongly drawn towards sentiment.

We gave *The Green Mile* a qualified recommendation, and Percy does not settle our reservations about it. Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan earn much of its sentiment; the length still tests our patience, and the treatment of Coffey needs more scrutiny than the storytelling allows. Hutchison's effective nastiness is worth separating from those larger problems. It is also a limited assignment: a sadistic guard gives an actor a clear target, but not necessarily much else to play. We would need a different sort of part to judge what else he can do.

Later television work included Horace Goodspeed in *Lost*, a recurring role from 2007 to 2009, while *Punisher: War Zone* (2008) cast him as the eccentric antagonist Loony Bin Jim. His reputation nevertheless rests largely on villainous or peculiar supporting characters. That repetition limits how we know him; making menace convincing still takes judgement, and he deserves credit for knowing when to hold back. For a first encounter, we would choose his appearances in *The X-Files*.
