We value him most with Guillermo del Toro, particularly when the work asks for tenderness as well as physical control. In *The Shape of Water* (2017), Doug Jones gives Sally Hawkins a romantic partner whose feelings seem as important as hers. Playing the Amphibian Man, he makes the attraction convincing without dialogue. We were moved by their non-verbal exchanges because the wish for contact seems equally strong on both sides. Hawkins has someone to respond to, and that matters more than how unusual the couple look. Jones is an actor we value for making a creature's feelings clear without having to explain them. His work with Guillermo del Toro began on *Mimic* (1997), before Abe Sapien in *Hellboy* (2004) brought him greater prominence. He then played both the Faun and the Pale Man in *Pan's Labyrinth* (2006). His background in mime and contortion helps explain the physical control required by such parts. Heavy prosthetics restrict movement and obscure the face, so a performance has to reach us through what remains available. Jones uses that movement to give his creatures emotion and personality. Del Toro gets particularly persuasive work from him by taking the creatures seriously, as *The Shape of Water* makes plain. The romance depends on Jones contributing as much as Hawkins, rather than simply standing there while she supplies the feeling. Our reservation is the film's eagerness to underline its fairy-tale sweetness. It sometimes makes the relationship feel too neatly arranged, despite how convincing the performers are together. We would have preferred del Toro to trust their exchanges a little more. Being identified so closely with creature work can leave his other acting overlooked. Augustus Margary in *Adaptation.* (2002) is a human role, though that is no reason in itself to consider it more substantial. On television, Saru in *Star Trek: Discovery* (2017–2024) became his longest-running role. There is little point wishing away the prosthetics when he can communicate so much through them. Start with *The Shape of Water* for Jones and Hawkins, allowing for a film that occasionally insists on feelings its actors have already earned. ## Biography Doug Jones is an American actor, contortionist and mime artist. Born on 24 May 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana, he graduated from Ball State University in 1982 with a degree in telecommunications and a minor in theatre, where he first trained in mime. He moved to Los Angeles in 1985. Jones is known for performing in heavy prosthetics and creature roles. He has collaborated repeatedly with director Guillermo del Toro, appearing as Abe Sapien in *Hellboy* (2004) and its 2008 sequel, as the Faun and Pale Man in *Pan's Labyrinth* (2006), and as the Amphibian Man in *The Shape of Water* (2017). He played Augustus Margary in *Adaptation.* (2002) and Billy Butcherson in *Hocus Pocus* (1993). On television, Jones portrayed Saru in *Star Trek: Discovery* (2017–2024) and Baron Afanas in *What We Do in the Shadows* (2019–2023). He has also appeared in *Falling Skies* (2013–2015) and *The Strain* (2014–2016). *Sources: en.wikipedia.org, imdb.com.* ## On Fi1m (10) - *The Shape of Water* (2017), Fi1m 83, as Amphibian Man — [page](https://film.one/film/the-shape-of-water.md) - *Crimson Peak* (2015), Fi1m 74, as Edith's Mother / Lady Sharpe — [page](https://film.one/film/crimson-peak.md) - *Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer* (2007), Fi1m 52, as Silver Surfer — [page](https://film.one/film/fantastic-four-rise-of-the-silver-surfer.md) - *Pan's Labyrinth* (2006), Fi1m 87, as Fauno / Pale Man — [page](https://film.one/film/pans-labyrinth.md) - *Hellboy* (2004), Fi1m 71, as Abraham 'Abe' Sapien — [page](https://film.one/film/hellboy.md) - *Adaptation.* (2002), Fi1m 83, as Augustus Margary — [page](https://film.one/film/adaptation.md) - *Men in Black II* (2002), Fi1m 48, as Joey — [page](https://film.one/film/men-in-black-ii.md) - *The Time Machine* (2002), Fi1m 47, as Spy Morlock — [page](https://film.one/film/the-time-machine.md) - *Three Kings* (1999), Fi1m 80, as Dead Iraqi Soldier — [page](https://film.one/film/three-kings.md) - *Batman Returns* (1992), Fi1m 81, as Thin Clown — [page](https://film.one/film/batman-returns.md) ## Complete filmography (145) Every credit, newest first.
