## Fi1m on Doug Liman

> Doug Liman makes familiar genres engaging by paying attention to people’s awkwardness and limitations. We like his warmth, especially in *Swingers*, though he sometimes lets the men keep talking after we have had enough.

In *Swingers* (1996), struggling actors in Los Angeles put a great deal of effort into appearing relaxed. Doug Liman watches them practise confidence and lets us see how much reassurance they still need. We laughed at their efforts to look cool, because Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn make the friendship convincing enough for its embarrassments to matter. Liman is good at showing why these men want one another around, even when the conversation becomes a trial.

Liman also shoots *Swingers*, and his Los Angeles locations let us notice a city beyond these men's immediate concerns. The nightlife has enough appeal to make their efforts understandable, without making the group look as glamorous as it would like. Brad Halvorson's production design gives the surroundings a sophistication the conversation cannot reliably match. Favreau's screenplay supplies the discomfort: encouragement from a friend can become another demand to perform. Liman gives that pressure room to register without treating the friendship as a fraud.

*Go* (1999) extended the early interest in young ensembles, before *The Bourne Identity* (2002) took Liman into studio action. The spy film's attention to character and physical limitations is a useful clue to what connects these phases. His preference for handheld camerawork puts us close to the action rather than leaving us to inspect it from a comfortable distance. *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* (2005) mixed action with comedy, while *Edge of Tomorrow* (2014) gave him a time-loop premise to work with.

Liman favours a loose, improvisational shoot; we would sometimes like a firmer decision about what to leave out. In *Swingers*, Trent's confidence wears us down, and the writing does not always give us enough reason to stay with Mike's unease. Some exchanges linger because the film seems too pleased with the men's cleverness. That is a real weakness in a comedy built around the pleasure of company, however much warmth Favreau and Vaughn provide. Start with *Swingers* for the friendship, and allow for a few conversations we would have left earlier.

## Biography

Doug Liman is an American film director and producer. He directed and served as cinematographer on the comedy *Swingers* (1996), his first major success, which he also financed on a low budget.

Liman is known for directing *Go* (1999), *The Bourne Identity* (2002), *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* (2005), *Jumper* (2008), *Edge of Tomorrow* (2014), *American Made* (2017) and *Road House* (2024). He attended Brown University, where he co-founded Brown Television and the National Association of College Broadcasters with Dave Bartis; the pair later co-owned the production company Hypnotic.
