> Douglas Booth takes chances with his appearance and his choice of films. The commitment is welcome, but *Loving Vincent* exposes a limitation: he can give a leading character too little energy to hold our attention.

In *Loving Vincent* (2017), Douglas Booth’s Armand Roulin questions people about Vincent van Gogh’s death, surrounded by moving brushstrokes. Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman’s animation gives us time to look at the paint, and too often that is where our attention stays. We grew impatient with Armand because Booth gives his questions so little urgency; he sounds as though he is completing a task. The stiff detective story does him few favours, but a more curious investigator might have made its familiar questions worth following.

Booth first came to prominence playing Boy George in *Worried About the Boy* (2010), with shaved eyebrows and heavy make-up. He was prepared to alter an appearance that critics have sometimes found distracting. Literary adaptations followed, including *Great Expectations* (2011) and *Romeo & Juliet* (2013). We put little weight on the fuss about his appearance as Pip; reservations about narrow vocal delivery as Romeo are more pertinent to the work we want to see him do.

His move into Hollywood included Darren Aronofsky’s *Noah* (2014) and *Jupiter Ascending* (2015), hardly evidence of a search for the safest possible jobs. *The Riot Club* (2014) kept British ensemble work in the mix, while Nikki Sixx in *The Dirt* (2019) offered another musician. There is some curiosity in these choices, which we welcome. We would hesitate to mistake Armand’s inertia for the limit of what Booth can do.

*Loving Vincent* also gives us a useful answer to the fuss about his face: the problem is in the delivery. We need to hear curiosity, irritation or doubt in Armand’s questions, and too much of the time the painted surroundings are doing the work. The film’s care for van Gogh is welcome, and its animation remains worth considering if painting is the attraction. Approach it on those terms, rather than expecting Booth to carry the evening.

Douglas John Booth is an English actor. Born on 9 July 1992 in London, he trained at the National Youth Music Theatre and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Booth first came to attention for his portrayal of Boy George in the BBC film *Worried About the Boy* (2010). He has since appeared in *Great Expectations* (2011), *Romeo & Juliet* (2013), *Noah* (2014), *The Riot Club* (2014), *Jupiter Ascending* (2015), *Pride and Prejudice and Zombies* (2016), *Mary Shelley* (2017), *The Limehouse Golem* (2016) and *Loving Vincent* (2017), in which he voiced Armand Roulin. Later credits include *The Dirt* (2019) as Nikki Sixx and *The Sandman* (2022).

In 2023 he married actress Bel Powley, daughter of actor Mark Powley.
