In *Imitation of Life* (1959), people talk to mirrors. Lana Turner's Lora Meredith lives in a white house with a staircase wide enough for a musical, and when she speaks to someone she is as often speaking to their reflection as to their face. That is the Sirk habit: the set dressed to the ceiling, colours no real room has ever had, and the camera drifting to the person at the edge of the frame whom nobody in the scene is looking at. He knew which story the audience had paid for and kept showing them the other one.

He came to Hollywood late and from a long way off. Sirk directed theatre in Germany in the 1920s, made films at UFA between 1934 and 1937, left the country that year and reached America in the early 1940s, where he worked across genres. The films his name now stands for were made at Universal-International between 1952 and 1959 with the producer Ross Hunter: *Magnificent Obsession* (1954), which began his partnership with Rock Hudson, *All That Heaven Allows* (1955), *Written on the Wind* (1956) and *Imitation of Life*, after which he retired to Europe. Hunter produced nine of his films, Hudson appeared in nine and Russell Metty photographed ten.

Metty is the collaborator to watch. In *Imitation of Life* he lights Lora's flat the yellow of a paperback and her later house so that everything she buys sits in it like a shop window. Frank Skinner's score swells on cue and Milton Carruth cuts to the tear before it falls, and none of it is careless: Sirk lets you see the machinery of the weepie while it runs. Reviewers at the time called the films glossy, sentimental soap opera, and the label of women's pictures stuck until the 1960s and 1970s. We think they were watching the wrong half of the frame. Sirk's women are shut in by houses, marriages and money, and the artificial rooms he builds around them are how he says so.

We should own how it lands. For the first hour of *Imitation of Life* we found the manner cold, all glass and telegrams, and then Juanita Moore's Annie Johnson stood in a kitchen doorway at the edge of one of Turner's scenes and the cold turned out to be the point: the film had been keeping us at a distance from the woman with the gowns so that we would lean towards the woman without them. There is a cost. Turner's half of that film is thin, and a director who spends his attention on the margins can leave the centre underfed.

He was proud of his actors as well as his rooms. Of Hudson, whom the studio had written off, he said years later, and not without pride, that the young man's dream had been to become a good actor and that he had helped him become one. Start with *Imitation of Life*, at home, with someone who will not laugh at the staircase, and give it the hour.
