## Biography

Dudley Digges (also credited as Dudley Diggs or John Dudley Digges) was an Irish actor, stage director and producer. Born in Dublin in 1879, he moved to the United States in 1904 with a group of Irish players and built a long career on Broadway, where he also worked as a producer and director.

He appeared in more than fifty films between 1929 and 1946. Among his notable screen roles were Casper Gutman in the 1931 version of *The Maltese Falcon*, the Chief Detective in *The Invisible Man* (1933), Dawson in *China Seas* (1935) and Bacchus in *Mutiny on the Bounty* (1935). In 1924 he founded the Maverick Theater in Woodstock, New York.
