E. L. James is a British writer. Born Erika Mitchell on 7 March 1963 in London, she worked in television production for twenty-five years before beginning to write.

She is the author of the erotic romance trilogy *Fifty Shades of Grey* (2011), *Fifty Shades Darker* (2012) and *Fifty Shades Freed* (2012). The books were adapted into a film trilogy for which she served as producer; the first film, *Fifty Shades of Grey*, was released in 2015. She is married to the novelist and screenwriter Niall Leonard.
