## Fi1m on Ed Bye

> Ed Bye knows how to make unruly performers and physical comedy work within a studio. We value that practical skill, though his work can become tiring when a joke gets more encouragement than it needs.

In *The Young Ones* (1982), the house itself can supply a joke before anybody speaks. The series makes its disorder legible without tidying away what makes it funny. Bye shares the directing credit with Paul Jackson and Geoff Posner, so the achievement is not his alone. We rate their work most highly when the staging gives a ridiculous idea enough time to register. It is a useful introduction to Bye’s feel for unruly comedy, and to the difficulty of knowing when to ease off.

With *Red Dwarf* (1988) and *Bottom* (1991), the studio sitcom became the centre of his work. He directed the first four series of *Red Dwarf*, returned for its seventh and eighth, and directed the first two series of *Bottom*. On *Bottom*, his skill was accommodating physical stunts and cartoon violence within the studio’s limits while leaving the ensemble room to play. His use of live sound effects makes timing a practical concern for the whole production, rather than something to sort out afterwards. Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson are recurring collaborators, and their willingness to be unreasonable is something his staging can use.

We were worn out by stretches of *The Young Ones*, because the direction and performances sometimes press on before we have enjoyed the surprise. Colin Jones’s editing helps the interruptions land, but a few jokes still need a quicker departure. Mayall and Edmondson make much of the noise worthwhile, but the programme can be tiring even when we are enjoying it. The sentient house offers a better example: the setting supplies the comedy without another actor having to insist on it.

The move into features included *Kevin & Perry Go Large* (2000), which brought him characters already established in Harry Enfield’s sketches. He has also kept directing television comedy into the 2020s, including episodes of *Murder, They Hope*. We would start with *The Young Ones*, preferably on an evening when quiet is not a priority.
