In *A Question of Silence* she gives the psychiatrist, and us, nothing to work with, and it unsettles more than any speech. Five decades of ordinary women in tight corners, and Gorris used her best. In Marleen Gorris's *A Question of Silence* (1982), a psychiatrist sits across a table from a housewife who has helped kill a shopkeeper and asks her why. Edda Barends, as Christine M., does not answer. She does not look away either, or weep, or set her jaw; she gives the psychiatrist, and us, no expression we can use. Most actors would find a way to signal the wound underneath. Barends declines, so the scene has to be understood from what is around her rather than from her face. It is the least showy performance in the film and the one that stays. She came to it from the stage. Barends trained at the Toneelschool Amsterdam, made her debut in 1967, and worked her way through the Dutch companies: Toneelgroep Studio, Globe, the Haagse Comedie, the Nieuwe Komedie, Het Werkteater, as well as the core group of radio-drama players. The women she plays are housewives and mothers in small rooms and narrow circumstances, and she plays them from the inside, with no comment laid on top. Gorris saw this and built Christine's scenes around it, with Frans Bromet's camera and Hans van Dongen's cutting holding on a face that will not move, so the silence becomes the point rather than a gap. Henriëtte Tol, who in the same film answers every question with a sharper one, is the necessary opposite, and the two actors went straight on to *Broken Mirrors* with the same director, cinematographer and editor. We expected to be bored by a woman who will not speak and were instead unnerved by her. In the interviews Cox Habbema's Janine has to do the work of two people, asking and then supplying, and Barends simply sits there and lets her, and before long we were the ones wanting to fill the silence. That is the performance: the film's argument gets made in the viewer's head, and she leaves us to it. She said in a 1984 interview that she wanted to do worthwhile things, plays in which the spectator could recognise themselves, and that is roughly what she has done since, in supporting parts rather than leads, on television rather than in cinemas. None of it is flashy and none of it needs to be. Gorris gave her one part in which not acting was the acting, and it is still the place to start. ## Biography Edda Barends is a Dutch actress.
