## Fi1m on Eddie Marsan

> Eddie Marsan can make a softly spoken boss frightening without asking us to admire the performance. We value his precision with difficult men, though even he needs a script that lets them be more than a type.

In *Fair Play* (2023), Eddie Marsan’s Campbell barely raises his voice, yet he is the most frightening person in the building. He is the boss, and whose name he remembers tells us something about who matters there. We felt uneasy watching him because he makes that small act of recognition carry the threat of being ignored. Chloe Domont’s film becomes less interesting once it settles on its villain, but Marsan needs no such insistence. His quiet delivery makes us listen for the slight that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

His breakthrough came as Killoran in Martin Scorsese’s *Gangs of New York* (2002), before repeated work with Mike Leigh helped establish him in British character drama. *Vera Drake* (2004) and *Happy-Go-Lucky* (2008) belong to that collaboration, with the latter giving him Scott, a volatile driving instructor. Leigh’s extended preparation and collaborative character-building suit an actor interested in what makes an unpleasant man’s behaviour comprehensible. That is the part of Marsan’s work we value most: he can make us understand a man without making him agreeable.

*Back to Black* (2024) gives him less to do with that ability. As Mitch, he beams during the family sing-song, and the warmth is easy to accept. But director Sam Taylor-Johnson and writer Matt Greenhalgh leave him as a worried father and little more, within a film too gentle with its men. The performance fits the affectionate household they have written; it cannot supply the harder questions they have left out. We would not recommend the film for Marsan, whose presence here is a reminder that a dependable actor still needs something specific to play.

Repeated casting as angry or abusive men risks making his arrival a warning before he has spoken. His strength is the care he takes over their motives, rather than any appetite for displaying their ugliness. We are more interested in what he can do with a character’s ordinary behaviour than in another demonstration that he can frighten us. Start with *Happy-Go-Lucky* for the work with Leigh; try *Fair Play* if a strong first hour will do.

## Biography

Eddie Marsan is an English actor. Born in Stepney, London, he trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and began his career in theatre before moving into film and television.

He is known for roles including Etheridge in *V for Vendetta* (2006), Inspector Lestrade in the *Sherlock Holmes* films (2009, 2011), and Red in *Hancock* (2008). He has collaborated several times with director Mike Leigh, winning the British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for *Vera Drake* (2004) and again for *Happy-Go-Lucky* (2008), for which he also received the London Film Critics Circle Award and the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Marsan appeared as Mitch Winehouse in *Back to Black* (2024) and as Campbell in *Fair Play* (2023). He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to drama.
