## Biography

Edgar Allan Woolf (25 April 1881 – 9 December 1943) was an American lyricist, playwright and screenwriter. He attended the City College of New York and Columbia University, graduating from the latter in 1901. After beginning as an actor, he wrote sketches and plays for vaudeville performers and contributed to several Broadway productions in the 1900s and 1910s.

In the early 1930s Woolf moved to Los Angeles and worked as a screenwriter for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, often in collaboration with Florence Ryerson. He is best known for co-writing the screenplay for *The Wizard of Oz* (1939) with Ryerson and Noel Langley; the pair created the character of Professor Marvel. Other screen credits include *Grand Hotel* (1932) and *The Mask of Fu Manchu* (1932).
