## Biography

Edgar Bergen (born Edgar John Berggren, 16 February 1903 – 30 September 1978) was an American ventriloquist, comedian and actor. He was best known for his ventriloquist characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd.

Bergen began performing in vaudeville and became a radio star with *The Edgar Bergen-Charlie McCarthy Show*, which ran from 1937 to 1957. He appeared in films including *Fun and Fancy Free* (1947) and *I Remember Mama* (1948). His final screen role was as himself with Charlie McCarthy in *The Muppet Movie* (1979); the film was dedicated to his memory.

He was the father of actress Candice Bergen.
