## Biography

Edgar Reitz is a German film director, screenwriter and producer. Born in 1932 in Morbach in the Hunsrück region, he studied German, journalism, art history and theatre in Munich before working as a camera, editing and production assistant from 1953. He was a signatory of the 1962 Oberhausen Manifesto and co-founded the Institute for Film Design at the Ulm School of Design, where he taught.

Reitz is best known for the *Heimat* series, beginning with the eleven-part *Heimat* (1984), on which he served as director, writer, story author, screenwriter, creator and producer. The epic chronicle of life in a fictional Hunsrück village spans much of the twentieth century and was followed by further instalments, including *Die zweite Heimat* (1992) and *Heimat 3* (2004), as well as the feature *Home from Home – Chronicle of a Vision* (2013). He has been Professor of Film at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe since 1995 and has received multiple German Film Awards and honours for his body of work.
