## Fi1m on Edie Falco

> Edie Falco can make a conversation turn on the person who has stopped speaking. We rate her most highly when a part gives her time to show affection wearing thin without pretending it has disappeared.

In *The Sopranos* (1999), Edie Falco keeps Carmela Soprano worth watching while Tony is busy insisting on being heard. Her response can be clear before she says anything. Alongside James Gandolfini, she makes the domestic scenes as absorbing as the criminal business, with no need to compete for volume. We felt for Carmela because Falco kept her affection for Tony believable even when she seemed to have exhausted her patience. That is a considerable achievement in a programme so inclined to give his complaints another hearing.

Small parts in Hal Hartley's independent films and a supporting appearance in *Bullets Over Broadway* (1994) preceded her substantial television work. She played Officer Diane Whittlesey in *Oz* (1997) before *The Sopranos* brought wider recognition. *Nurse Jackie* (2009) then gave her the lead as Jackie Peyton, with more scope for dry wit and precise physical acting. That move towards dark comedy makes sense for an actor so good at showing how people justify themselves, though it is Carmela who gives us the strongest reason to recommend her.

*The Sopranos* also shows why she benefits from a scene that leaves room for a response. Lorraine Bracco's Jennifer Melfi has a similar attentiveness. With either actor, Tony's evasions become harder to overlook. Our reservation about the programme is that it sometimes continues examining his grievances after the point is clear. Falco's reactions can make that extra explanation feel unnecessary, and we would gladly have spent more time with her.

She plays General Ardmore in *Avatar: The Way of Water* (2022) and *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (2025). In the latter, she gets little to do and handles it briskly. The film's repetition is hardly her fault, though briskness alone cannot make an underwritten assignment rewarding. It is a useful warning against assuming that a recognisable actor has been given something worth watching. Start with Carmela, and pay attention when Tony has the most to say.
