## Biography

Edith Evanson (née Carlson) was an American character actress in film, stage and television. She was born in Tacoma, Washington, where she worked as a court reporter before appearing in stage productions. In 1923 she married Morris Otto Evanson; the couple had no children.

Evanson began her film career in 1940 with an uncredited role in *The Man Who Wouldn't Talk*. In the 1940s and 1950s she appeared in supporting parts, often as maids, secretaries, landladies or busybodies. Her credits include *Citizen Kane* (1941), *Woman of the Year* (1942), *Rope* (1948) as Mrs. Wilson, *The Day the Earth Stood Still* (1951), *Shane* (1953), *The Big Heat* (1953) and *Marnie* (1964). She also worked in television from the late 1940s and retired in 1974.
