## Fi1m on Édith Scob

> Édith Scob’s cultured voice and elegant presence made supporting characters matter. We value her poise, though *Holy Motors* shows the limit of casting a distinctive actor and then giving her too little freedom.

In *Holy Motors* (2012), Édith Scob is Céline, the chauffeur and companion beside Denis Lavant’s succession of characters. Her elegance gives us someone else to watch in a film so absorbed by its leading man’s transformations. Scob’s refined screen manner can make a supporting figure worth attending to without much help from the writing. We warmly recommend Leos Carax’s strange, funny film for its mischief and unexpected sadness. But Céline leaves us wanting a fuller part for the actor.

The early landmark is Georges Franju’s *Eyes Without a Face* (1960), with Scob as the masked daughter Christiane Génessier. That role puts a particular restriction on an actor’s means of expression, and it remains a useful starting point for her work. Her later career brought periods of reduced screen visibility and a greater share of supporting and character parts. The refined figures suited her cultured voice and elegant bearing, with Hélène in Olivier Assayas’s *Summer Hours* (2008) a notable later role. She continued taking film and television roles through the 2010s.

Carax had already worked with Scob on *The Lovers on the Bridge* (1991) before *Holy Motors*. The later film lets Lavant keep changing while Scob, Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue have much less scope. We were frustrated by Céline’s limited part because Scob makes her worth watching even beside all that activity. The sadness of performance interests Carax, yet the women receive less opportunity to express it. That unevenness reduces our interest in the encounters beyond Lavant’s experience.

The repeated collaborations are worth following too: four films with Franju and six with Raúl Ruiz. They are a useful reminder that the masked daughter is only one part of her work. We would follow the supporting parts for the voice and the elegance, while keeping an eye on how much the director allows her to do. For a first encounter with Scob herself, give *Eyes Without a Face* priority.

## Biography

Édith Scob was a French film and theatre actress. Born in Paris in 1937, she began her career in the late 1950s while studying at the Sorbonne. She made her film debut in Georges Franju’s *Head Against the Wall* (1959) and gained early prominence for her role as Christiane in his *Eyes Without a Face* (1960).

Scob appeared in more than one hundred films and television productions, often in supporting roles in auteur cinema. Notable later credits include *The Lovers on the Bridge* (1991), *Brotherhood of the Wolf* (2001), *Summer Hours* (2008) and *Holy Motors* (2012), in which she played Céline. She was twice nominated for the César Award for Best Supporting Actress, for *Summer Hours* and *Holy Motors*. She also worked extensively in theatre, co-founding an avant-garde company in Bagnolet with her husband, composer Georges Aperghis. Scob died in Paris in 2019.
