## Biography

Edmond O'Brien was an American actor whose career spanned stage, film and television from the 1930s to the 1970s. Born in New York City on 10 September 1915, he began in theatre, making his Broadway debut in 1936 and appearing in Shakespeare productions, including work with Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre.

He is known for supporting roles in films such as *The Killers* (1946), *White Heat* (1949), *D.O.A.* (1950) and *Julius Caesar* (1953), in which he played Casca. O'Brien won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *The Barefoot Contessa* (1954) and received a further nomination for *Seven Days in May* (1964). Later credits include *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* (1962) and *The Wild Bunch* (1969). He also appeared in the television series *Sam Benedict* (1962–1963). O'Brien died on 9 May 1985.
