He appeared in more than 130 films between 1907 and 1952, often in supporting roles. Born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, on 12 December 1882, he began his career in John Hare's touring company and later performed on the West End stage and in Glasgow. He worked in French silent films under the name Edmond Bréon, notably as Inspector Juve in the Fantômas series (1913–1914) for Louis Feuillade, and appeared in Les vampires (1915–1916). After returning to Britain, he made films including A Little Bit of Fluff (1928), then moved to North America. His later credits include Colonel Morgan in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), Dr. Michael Barkstane in The Woman in the Window (1944), General Huddleston in Gaslight (1944), and Professor Ambrose in The Thing from Another World (1951).
