## Biography

Edmund H. North (1911–1990) was an American screenwriter. He shared the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with Francis Ford Coppola for their script for *Patton* (1970).

North wrote the screenplay for the science-fiction film *The Day the Earth Stood Still* (1951) and is credited with originating the line “Klaatu barada nikto”. His other credits include *In a Lonely Place* (1950), *Cowboy* (1958), *Sink the Bismarck!* (1960), *H.M.S. Defiant* (1962) and *Meteor* (1979).

Born in New York City, North attended Culver Military Academy and Stanford University. During the Second World War he served as a major in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, producing training films. He was a former president of the screen branch of the Writers Guild of America.
