## Biography

Edmund L. Hartmann (24 September 1911 – 28 November 2003) was an American screenwriter and television producer. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he attended Washington University in St. Louis before moving to Hollywood in the mid-1930s.

He wrote screenplays for numerous films, including several Bob Hope comedies such as *The Paleface* (1948), *Sorrowful Jones* (1949), *Fancy Pants* (1950) and *The Lemon Drop Kid* (1951), as well as *The Caddy* (1953) and earlier work on Sherlock Holmes films. In television he produced *My Three Sons* for ten seasons from 1962 and *Family Affair* (1966–1971).

Hartmann served as president of the Writers Guild of America West from 1955 to 1959 and later as national chairman.
