## Biography

Edmund Meisel was an Austrian-born composer and conductor. Born in Vienna, he moved to Berlin as a child and trained as a violinist and composer there. He began his career writing incidental music for the stage in the 1920s, collaborating with Erwin Piscator and Bertolt Brecht.

Meisel gained prominence with his score for Sergei Eisenstein's *Battleship Potemkin* (1925), composed in twelve days for the 1926 German release. He went on to score other Eisenstein films including *October (Ten Days that Shook the World)* (1928) and Walter Ruttmann's *Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis* (1927). He also composed for additional silent films and experimented with sound techniques in the late 1920s.

Meisel died in Berlin on 14 November 1930, aged 36, while working on Arnold Fanck's *Storm Over Mont Blanc*.
