Wonacott made her screen debut as Ann Newton in Alfred Hitchcock's *Shadow of a Doubt* (1943). Discovered by Hitchcock and producer Jack H. Skirball while waiting for a bus in Santa Rosa, California, she had no prior acting experience. She appeared in a small number of other films in the 1940s and early 1950s, including an uncredited role in *The Bells of St. Mary's* (1945), before retiring from acting.
