## Biography

Eduard Tisse (also credited as Eduard Tissé) was a Soviet cinematographer. Born in Liepāja in the Russian Empire (now Latvia), he began his career as a newsreel and military cameraman during the First World War and the Russian Civil War. In 1921 he became a professor at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography.

Tisse is best known for his long collaboration with director Sergei Eisenstein. He served as director of photography on *Strike* (1925), *Battleship Potemkin* (1925), *October: Ten Days That Shook the World* (1928), *The General Line* (1929), *Alexander Nevsky* (1938), *Ivan the Terrible, Part I* (1944) and *Ivan the Terrible, Part II* (1958). He received three Stalin Prizes (first degree) in 1946, 1949 and 1950.
