## Biography

Edward B. Powell (also credited as Edward Powell) was an American arranger, orchestrator and composer. Born on 5 December 1909 in Carroll County, Illinois, he died on 28 February 1984 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.

He served for over three decades as Alfred Newman's principal orchestrator and musical lieutenant at 20th Century Fox, contributing to the scores of around 400 films. His work included orchestral arrangements for *Miracle on 34th Street* (1947) and arrangements or orchestrations for *Modern Times* (1936), *My Darling Clementine* (1946), *All About Eve* (1950), *How to Marry a Millionaire* (1953), *The Seven Year Itch* (1955), *An Affair to Remember* (1957) and *Hang 'em High* (1968).

Powell was elected president of the American Society of Music Arrangers in 1946. He was the great-uncle of composer Eddie Powell.
