## Biography

Edward Bond was an English playwright, screenwriter, poet and dramatic theorist. Born Thomas Edward Bond in Holloway, London, on 18 July 1934, he left school at 15 and began writing plays after submitting work to the Royal Court Theatre. His first full-length play, *The Pope’s Wedding*, was staged there in 1962.

Bond’s play *Saved* (1965) was central to the campaign that ended theatrical censorship in Britain. For cinema he wrote the screenplay for Nicolas Roeg’s *Walkabout* (1971) and contributed dialogue to Michelangelo Antonioni’s *Blow-Up* (1966); other screen work included *Laughter in the Dark* (1968). He died in Cambridge on 3 March 2024.
