## Biography

Edward Chapman (13 October 1901 – 9 August 1977) was an English actor. He began his stage career in 1924 with Ben Greet's company and made his London debut the following year. His early film roles included appearances in Alfred Hitchcock's *Juno and the Paycock* (1930) and *Murder!* (1930).

Chapman played Joe Morgan in *The Citadel* (1938). He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Post-war, he appeared in films such as *Things to Come* (1936), *It Always Rains on Sunday* (1947), *Night and the City* (1950), *The Card* (1952) and *X: The Unknown* (1956). He is particularly noted for playing Mr Grimsdale, the officious superior to Norman Wisdom's character, in several Wisdom comedies from the late 1950s and 1960s, including *The Square Peg* (1958).

Chapman continued working in film and television into the 1970s, with later credits including *School for Scoundrels* (1960), *The Man Who Haunted Himself* (1970) and the BBC series *The Onedin Line* (1971–1972). He was the uncle of actors and writers John Chapman and Paul Chapman.
