## Biography

Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer. Born in Broadheath near Worcester, he received little formal training in composition and worked initially as a violinist, organist and bandmaster before establishing himself as a composer in the late 1890s.

His best-known works include the Enigma Variations (1899), the oratorio The Dream of Gerontius (1900), two symphonies, the Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto, and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches. Music from the marches featured in the 2000 Disney film Fantasia 2000. He was knighted in 1904 and appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.
