## Fi1m on Edward Hardwicke

> Edward Hardwicke made calm, attentive men worth watching. We value the intelligence of his Watson opposite Jeremy Brett, and the understatement of his supporting work in *Shadowlands*: modest acting that gives the people beside him more room.

Edward Hardwicke’s Watson gives Jeremy Brett’s Holmes someone intelligent to talk to. The calm army doctor is good company, and Hardwicke’s attentiveness keeps Brett’s more flamboyant performance from becoming a solo act. His television breakthrough had come as Captain Pat Grant in *Colditz* (1972–73); succeeding David Burke in Granada’s *Sherlock Holmes* (1986–94) gave him the part that would define his reputation. Of working with Brett, he said: “We both believed that the friendship between Holmes and Watson must be rooted in humour.” That helps explain why his steadiness never feels like a disapproving adult waiting for the fun to stop.

In *Shadowlands* (1993), his Warnie Lewis is C.S. Lewis’s brother, another supporting part suited to an actor who need not press every point. Hardwicke’s understatement is valuable here because the family connection needs to be credible beside the central romance. Richard Attenborough has Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger to carry that romance, and our recommendation rests chiefly on them. We were moved by their work together, which makes the film’s careful preparation for tears feel worthwhile. His contribution is quieter, but it matters that Warnie feels like a person with a place in Lewis’s life.

Our reservation about *Shadowlands* is that Joy gets less room to be complicated than the man she loves. Hardwicke is worth watching in it, even where Attenborough’s film leaves us with reservations. It also suggests why describing him simply as dependable sells him short: playing a decent, restrained man still requires an actor to make him worth attending to. We would happily have spent more time with Warnie.

Cinema continued to employ him chiefly in support, including as the Earl of Arundel in *Elizabeth* (1998). There were fewer leading opportunities after *Shadowlands*, a disappointing use of an actor whose quiet intelligence could have sustained more attention. We would have welcomed more substantial film parts, though that does not make the smaller ones wasted work. Start with *Shadowlands*; then give his Watson time to become familiar.

## Biography

Edward Hardwicke (1932–2011) was an English actor. The son of actors Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Helena Pickard, he made his screen debut as a child in the 1943 film *A Guy Named Joe*. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his professional career on stage, appearing with companies including the Bristol Old Vic and Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre.

On television, Hardwicke played Captain Pat Grant in the series *Colditz* (1972–73) and succeeded David Burke as Dr John Watson in Granada Television’s *Sherlock Holmes* adaptations (1986–94). His film roles included Warnie Lewis in *Shadowlands* (1993), Lord Stanley in *Richard III* (1995), the Earl of Arundel in *Elizabeth* (1998) and Mr Brownlow in *Oliver Twist* (2005).
