He appeared on Broadway in the 1920s, including the stage adaptation of Dracula, before making his screen debut in the 1931 film version. He is known for roles in Universal horror productions of the 1930s, including Professor Van Helsing in *Dracula* (1931) and *Dracula's Daughter* (1936), Dr Waldman in *Frankenstein* (1931), and Dr Muller in *The Mummy* (1932). He also delivered the on-screen prologue warning audiences in *Frankenstein*.
