Born on 10 November 1883 in St Louis, Missouri, he died on 4 March 1964 in Hollywood, California. He appeared in more than 150 films between 1909 and 1947, and directed 52 films between 1912 and 1919. August began in stage work and entered films with the Biograph Company. He co-founded Eaco Films in 1914 and wrote novels under the pen name Montague Lawrence.
