## Biography

Elisabeth Neumann-Viertel (5 April 1900 – 24 December 1994) was an Austrian actress. She trained in Munich and made her stage debut at the Münchner Kammerspiele in 1921. She worked in Berlin theatres during the 1920s and early 1930s before emigrating to the United States in 1938, where she appeared on Broadway and in some Hollywood films.

After returning to Europe after the war, she became a character actress in German and Austrian film and television, often in supporting roles. She is known for playing Fräulein Schneider in *Cabaret* (1972), Frau Wenzer in *The Odessa File* (1974), and appearances in series such as *Derrick* and *Scene of the Crime*. She was married to film director Berthold Viertel from 1949 until his death in 1953 and retired in the late 1980s.
