We were moved by their laughter, because Deniz Gamze Ergüven lets us enjoy their company before showing their closeness under threat. The film gives us something worth caring about before it asks us to be angry.

İşcan works alongside Güneş Şensoy, Doğa Zeynep Doğuşlu, Tuğba Sunguroğlu and İlayda Akdoğan, and the group feels as though it has spent years together. Şensoy’s Lale, the youngest, watches the adults and assesses how much she can get away with. There is less room for Ece to emerge as an individual, which is a limitation even in an ensemble this persuasive. But it would be a mistake to judge İşcan only by how often she draws attention away from the others. Making us believe that these girls belong to one another is a substantial part of the job.

İşcan made her film debut as Yıldız in *Beş Vakit* (also known as *Times and Winds*, 2006). She gained popularity in Turkey through her role in the television series *Küçük Kadınlar* (2008–2010). In 2008 she appeared as Hayat in Reha Erdem's *Hayat Var* (also known as *My Only Sunshine*).

She received the IFFI Best Actor Award (Female) at the 46th International Film Festival of India. Other credits include *Sibel* (2018) as Fatma and *Immortals* (2018) as Ayşe.
