## Fi1m on Elizabeth Banks

> Elizabeth Banks makes supporting parts count through sharp comic timing and physical confidence. We value her in an ensemble; her directing can deliver a fine gag, but has trouble keeping a whole film moving.

In *The Hunger Games* (2012), Elizabeth Banks gives Effie Trinket mannerisms to match the elaborate costumes. It is a conspicuous performance, well suited to an actor whose comedy makes such good use of physical behaviour. She is a sharp ensemble player who has not always found material worth her time. The supporting roles suit her, though that is no reason to keep her in them.

Sam Raimi's *Spider-Man* (2002) gave her wider notice as Betty Brant, and Judd Apatow's *The 40 Year-Old Virgin* (2005) established her comic strengths. As Beth, she brings timing and improvisational confidence to a crowded cast. Apatow's film is worth an evening, though its overlong routines and lazy jokes keep interrupting the warmth. Banks is well suited to that company without being a reason to forgive all the writing.

Her voice work as Wyldstyle / Lucy in the 2014 Lego film belongs to a better-managed ensemble. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller keep the invention coming, sometimes to the point of exhaustion, but their affection for ordinary people makes the pace worth tolerating. Her dramatic work includes *Love & Mercy* (2014) and Jill Ruckelshaus in *Mrs. America* (2020). The latter's performances are a substantial reason to watch, even when its handling of history feels too tidy.

Directing has exposed a difficulty in sustaining the comedy over a whole film. She began directing features with *Pitch Perfect 2* (2015), and in *Cocaine Bear* (2023) she stages the attacks in daylight. Cinematographer John Guleserian lights the forest bright green and full of sun, so the violence happens in plain view. The attacks work, but the waiting between them leaves a capable cast with too little to do.

We laughed guiltily at the road sequence in *Cocaine Bear*, where the low camera and editor Joel Negron's cuts turn each impact into a precisely timed gag. For those few minutes, Banks directs with the comic assurance we value in her acting. Mark Mothersbaugh's period synthesisers help by taking the absurd premise seriously. Start with the Lego film or *The 40 Year-Old Virgin*; save *Cocaine Bear* for an evening when a few good laughs will suffice.
