Elizabeth Jane Howard was an English novelist and television scriptwriter. She was born in London on 26 March 1923 and died in Bungay, Suffolk, on 2 January 2014.

Howard wrote episodes for the series *Upstairs, Downstairs* (1971). She is best known for the five novels of the Cazalet Chronicle, published between 1990 and 2013, which were partly adapted for BBC television in 2001. Her other novels include *The Beautiful Visit* (1950), *The Long View* (1956), *After Julius* (1965) and *Getting It Right* (1982).

Earlier in her career she worked as an actress, a BBC broadcaster during the Second World War and an editor at publishing houses. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film *Getting It Right*.
