## Fi1m on Ellen Wong

> Ellen Wong's Knives Chau gives *Scott Pilgrim vs. the World* much of its emotional pull. We value that directness and her physical skill; the sidekick casting that followed has not always given her enough to do.

In *Scott Pilgrim vs. the World* (2010), Ellen Wong's Knives Chau is direct while the film around her is busy being knowing. Her openness gives Edgar Wright's action comedy someone worth caring about beyond the next joke or fight. We felt for Knives because Wong made her feelings matter even when Scott's difficulties took priority. She does not need to compete with the film's pace to hold our attention.

Wong has the physical skill to belong in Wright's fast-moving comedy, too: her taekwondo training helped her land that breakthrough part. The fights become repetitive, but her physical work is an asset. The larger frustration is Michael Bacall and Wright's screenplay, which gives the women too little room. Mary Elizabeth Winstead's reserved Ramona Flowers and Wong's more open Knives both suggest lives we would rather have followed further.

The parts that followed often made her the bubbly sidekick or the nerdy friend. In *The Carrie Diaries* (2013–2014), she played Jill 'Mouse' Chen, Carrie's best friend, as a series regular. Those parts can use an actor's warmth without asking much else of them. We would be wary of treating that casting as the limit of what Wong can do; Knives already gives us reason to want more.

*GLOW* (2017–2019) gave her a more specific task as Jenny Chey. The character's wrestling persona trades in Asian stereotypes, while her life outside the ring lets the programme examine them. Wong brought her Cambodian-Chinese heritage into the character's backstory. That offers something more substantial to work with than the requirement to be an agreeable friend.

She returned to Knives as a voice performer in *Scott Pilgrim Takes Off* (2023), this time with an expanded character arc. The appeal of more room for Knives is easy to understand from the earlier film. Wong had already made a stronger emotional impression than the central romance could manage. Start with Wright's film for the directness of that performance, and allow for the time it spends on people we found less interesting.
