## Biography

Elmo Williams was an American film editor, producer and director. He began his career in the 1930s as an assistant to editor Merrill G. White and worked at RKO before becoming a freelance editor.

Williams won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for *High Noon* (1952). He received a further nomination for *20,000 Leagues Under the Sea* (1954) and edited the Oscar-winning documentary *Design for Death* (1947). His other credits include *The Vikings* (1958), on which he also served as second-unit director. He later worked as a producer on *The Longest Day* (1962) and *Tora! Tora! Tora!* (1970), and was head of production at 20th Century Fox from 1971 to 1974. In 2006 he published the memoir *Elmo Williams: A Hollywood Memoir*.
