## Biography

Elwyn Jones (1923–1982) was a Welsh television writer and producer. Born in Cwmaman, Glamorgan, he attended the London School of Economics and worked as a journalist, including roles at the Radio Times, before joining the BBC in the late 1950s as a producer and scriptwriter.

He co-created the police drama series *Z-Cars* (1962) and wrote numerous episodes for it and its spin-offs. Between 1963 and 1966 he was Head of Drama (Series) at the BBC. He received a writing credit on *Doctor Who* (1963) and later worked as a freelance writer on series including *Softly, Softly* and *Barlow at Large*.

Jones also wrote true crime novels and documentary books. His work *The Last Two to Hang* (1966) earned an Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America. He co-authored the novel on which the film *Murder by Decree* (1979) was based.
