He made his stage debut in 1898 as Marcellus in *Julius Caesar* at the Stadttheater in Bromberg and later worked at the Schiller Theater in Berlin, where he served as deputy intendant from 1923 to 1931. He also collaborated with directors Max Reinhardt and Leopold Jessner. Rameau appeared in numerous German silent films from 1915 onwards, often in character roles. After leaving Germany in 1933, he reached the United States via Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and Britain. In Hollywood he took small parts in more than twenty films, including *Gaslight* (1944), in which he played Maestro Guardi, Ingrid Bergman's singing teacher. He returned to Germany after 1949 and resumed stage work, including a further period as deputy intendant at the Schiller Theater in 1951.
