## Biography

Emil Schünemann (1882–1964) was a German cinematographer. He trained as a photographer and entered the film industry in 1903 with Deutsche Mutoskop. During the First World War he worked as a front-line cameraman.

After the war he collaborated with directors including Fritz Lang on films such as *The Spiders* (1919–1920). He shot the Soviet science-fiction film *Aelita: Queen of Mars* (1924) in Moscow and worked in India on Franz Osten’s productions *Shiraz* (1928) and *A Throw of Dice* (1929).

Schünemann’s output declined after the introduction of sound. Following the Second World War he ran a photographic studio in Berlin before returning to cinematography for several DEFA productions in the early 1950s.
